Don’t know a Wind from a Bam? Never played Mahjong—or tried to learn and found yourself a little overwhelmed? This welcoming 2-part workshop series is designed to take you from Mahjong basics to confidently playing a guided game, one step at a time.
Over two sessions, Lauren Gross of Mahj the Day will introduce you to American Mahjong in a fun, approachable, and supportive environment.
Mahjong 101 is a welcoming introduction to American Mahjong designed to make learning the game approachable, enjoyable, and fun. Together, we’ll uncover the beauty of the tiles, understand the card and suits, learn the flow of the game - including dealing, the Charleston, and calling for a tile. It will get you ready to confidently join the table.
By the end of the session, you’ll have the foundation you need to start playing.
Ready to take your Mahjong skills to the next level? Mahjong 102 is designed to build on the foundation from Mahjong 101 while helping you feel more confident and comfortable at the table. We’ll start with a quick refresher on the tiles and flow of play, then dive deeper into the Charleston, the card, and game strategy through hands-on practice, so you can join your next Mahjong game with confidence.
No prior Mahjong experience required. All are welcome. Come ready to learn, play, and have fun!
Both sessions include:
• Full Mahjong table setup
• National Mah Jongg League Card provided for play
• Hands-on instruction and guided practice
Duration: 2 ½ hours per session
Bring a friend or come on your own! Bring your curiosity, your favorite beverage, and a sense of fun—we’ll provide the light refreshments, good company, and plenty of Mahjong fun.
